The CRN has rolled out a Research Skills Summer School for practitioner researchers and research interested professionals, including early years educators, social workers, youth workers, teachers, research consultants and early career academics.

The Summer School consists of a series of workshops held on Thursday evenings includes sessions on research design; sampling and recruitment; data collection methods; data analysis and training in different software packages; practitioner research; introduction to statistical analysis; ethics; and conducting literature searches and reviews, as well as another workshop on writing skills with practical exercises.

The first workshop in this summer school series was fully booked and focused on academic writing skills and publishing, including advice on how to get published as a non-academic. In this workshop participants got the opportunity to improve their skills in academic writing, structuring articles and written work in a manner that is more digestible and publishable. Participants had the opportunity to work closely with experienced academics, with a track record of getting published. The workshop was facilitated by Dr John Devaney (Queen’s University Belfast) and Professor Trevor Spratt (Trinity College Dublin) and was attended by a diverse audience from both practitioner and research backgrounds. The presentation from the workshop is available on
